BIO
Kat Abril is a 26-year old queer Panamanian artist who started working in traditional mediums in 2014.
They attended the Anglo-American University of Prague for a degree in the fine arts, curatorship, and art history in 2018. Since then they have moved to Meanjin (Brisbane) and have continued their practice there. Where they are refining their practice with the idea that “Art is Play”.
Working primarily in bright colour they create whimsy and explore surreal concepts in their works. Their works usually revolve around feminist, queer, and Latin American themes based around the exploration of identity.
They work primarily in gouache and watercolour, but have also dabbled in ink, markmaking, acryllics, pencils, and marker. Whatever they can use to create, they'll use.
Kat draws inspiration from nature, the surreal, and dreams. Using their own codex of symbols they create detail oriented pieces that encourage the viewer to look beyond the paint.
